Aqua Massage FAQ

Below are some frequently asked questions about aqua massage.  Please click here if you would like to see the benefits some of our customers have reported or if you would like to add your own comments.

What is Aqua Massage?

Aqua massage is a quick, convenient way to get a full-body massage.  You have an aqua massage in an aqua massage machine.  An aqua massage machine looks similar to a tanning bed.  All you need to do to prepare for the aqua massage is remove your shoes (no need to undress - in fact, we won't let you!).  After your shoes are removed you will lay down on the bed of the aqua massage machine.  You will put on headphones to listen to relaxing music during your massage.  The cover of the machine will come down over you.  Then a bar with 36 water jets travels from your toes to your neck and back again and again for the duration of your massage.  You will not get wet in an aqua massage machine; there is a barrier between you and the water.

Will I get wet?

No.  There is a waterproof barrier between you and the waterjets.  It is a thin layer, so you will get all the benefits of the water pressure, but it does keep you from getting wet.

How much does aqua massage cost?

Aqua massage is actually a very affordable massage option!  The cost for a 20 minute massage is $25, 30 minutes for $35, and so on.  Also, monthly massage plans are available at an even greater discount.  You can enjoy an aqua massage once a week for the same price or less than one monthly appointment with a massage therapist (typically $65 - $75).

How much time do I need to set aside?

Not very much!  A very good length of time for your aqua massage is 30 minutes.  A 30 minute aqua massage is roughly equivalent to a 60 minute massage with a massage therapist.  Appointments are encouraged, but you are also welcome to just walk right in whenever you feel the need for a massage and you'll be able to get in right away if available or without too long of a wait; no waiting weeks or days for relief.

Is an aqua massage very relaxing?

Yes!  Imagine how nice the jets of a whirlpool bath feel.  Or the feeling of using a massaging showerhead when you are taking a shower.  An aqua massage gives you a similar experience, except it is even better!  There are 36 water jets spraying at your body from many angles, not just the few jets focusing on one small area like with a massaging showerhead.  The jets travel up and down your body multiple times during your massage, giving you a full body massage.  The sound and motion of the water are also very soothing.  In addition, you can further relax by listening to relaxing music on headphones during your massage.

Will my aqua massage be private?

Yes!  Aquablue has two massage rooms.  The rooms are in a separate area of the store from the retail section.  Each room has solid floor to ceiling walls on three sides.  The remaining side has a curtain that can be closed for complete privacy.

How often should I get an aqua massage?

Ideally, once every week or two would be great!  This will keep your muscles, and your mind, relaxed.  Your muscles will not have a chance to become too tight and sore between massages.  You can even come in more often if you are working on a specific injury or problem area.  But, if you get too busy and forget to come in for a while, remember you can stop in again any time, we'll be here for you!

Can I adjust my aqua massage to my specific needs?

Yes!  There are many different intensity levels that can be programmed into the machine.  You can receive a light, gentle massage up to a very intense pressure for those of you who really have knots in your back or neck (like me)!  The pressure can even be adjusted for different sections of your body.  For example, if you really need to work on your lower back, but are a little more sensitive to so much pressure everywhere else, the machine can be programmed to suit your requirements.  In addition, if you want to focus the massage on a certain spot, the machine can be paused any time you choose.  You will have a control in your hand which allows you to pause the machine yourself whenever you want to.

How does aqua massage compare to a massage from a massage therapist?

Both forms of massage provide many of the same benefits such as relaxation, easing muscle and joint pain and increasing circulation.  Both forms of massage can provide anywhere from light pressure for a relaxing massage to very hard pressure for more of a deep tissue massage.

One of the main differences in the two types of massage is that aqua massage provides a full body massage throughout the duration of the massage rather than focusing on one part of the body for a few minutes, then moving on to another part, and so on.  One of the benefits of the full body massage is that you are able to relax quickly and the pressure on any specific body part is not as prolonged (and therefore pain from working on a specific area is reduced).

However, some people may prefer more focused work on a specific area or an area which an aqua massage does not really cover - such as the head (aqua massage focuses on the back and sides of your body).  A massage therapist may also provide more specific massage techniques such as pregnancy massages or reflexology.

Will aqua massage replace my massage therapist, chiropractor, or physical therapy visits?

It depends on the person.  Some people may prefer aqua massages to these other treatments.  Some people may prefer the other methods of treatment.  And many people will find that aqua massage can be a perfect complement to these other forms of treatment.

Aqua massage is a great way to stay relaxed in between massages from a massage therapist.  It is also a great inexpensive and quick option to try shortly before or after a treatment with a massage therapist, chiropractor, or physical therapist.  It can help your muscles relax and prepare for these other forms of treatment.  It can also soothe muscles that may be sore after one of these other forms of treatment.

Is aqua massage beneficial for the more, shall we say, mature person?

Definately!  Aqua massage helps with many of the aches and pains anyone of any age experiences.  We have many customers who say regular aqua massage really helps relieve their back and joint pain.

What if I'm claustrophobic?

You may still be able to enjoy an aqua massage if you are claustrophobic.  At first, my mom wasn't sure if she'd be able to handle being in the machine, but after getting used to the machine, now you can't get her out!

Please let us know if you are claustrophobic and we will work with you!  We will have you use the "roomier" machine which allows much more room to move around.  Your head is out of the machine when you have your massage and this may help your claustrophobic feelings.  You can do a couple trial runs where the canopy of the machine is closed, but the water is not running, to let you get used to the feeling.  The first couple times you use the machine, we can stay in the room with you - the idea that someone is there to help you may help.  There is also an emergency stop button right at your fingertips and under your control, so you can stop the massage and get out of the machine if you feel uncomfortable.

If these methods don't work, don't push yourself.  We'd rather lose your business than have you feel uncomfortable during your massage.  You can still buy some products from our retail side of the store to help you relax at home!

Do men like aqua massage?

Yes.  In fact many men may be more apt to try an aqua massage rather than a traditional massage because:

  • It is a "hands-off" massage
  • You don't have to make an appointment
  • You only need about 30 minutes

I have a medical condition. Can I have an aqua massage?

Unfortunately I can't provide you with a definitive answer.  If you are unsure whether you can have an aqua massage, you should be asking your doctor.  If your doctor says receiving a traditional, manual massage is fine then an aqua massage is generally fine.  There are many different pressure settings on the aqua massage machine so it can be set at a very light pressure level if need be.
